1950s shirtdress

Fabric used: Rayon (purchased at Spotlight) approx 4m. Cream Cotton poplin. Approx 1m

Hairband is made out of tiny hands and painted fabric flowers which were originally white

Notions used: Buttons of various sizes

Pattern used: a vintage simplicity pattern, but I will probably draft my own pattern in the future from a separate shirt and skirt.

This dress took a long time to come into fruition because I just lost the motivation to make it. I cut the fabric out in May but only started putting it together at the end of June. I should have lowered the armscye because it is just a smidge too tight and the cuffs are also a bit too tight. There’s also a weird puff at the shoulder that I couldn’t seem to get rid off. I also realised that i should have joined the skirt at the back and lowered the bodice so I wouldn’t have to add buttons to the top of the skirt as well.

I still have problems with joining the bodice and skirt portions together for dresses and this is no exception —- it’s horrendous without the belt, although I never planned to make it without, really. I cut the skirt too short so I added the cream parts, and then decided that it would look odd if only that was cream so I made the cuffs and collar from the same fabric.

The collar looks rather limp without a collar stand but other than that, I’m quite happy with this. It’s quite a light dress to wear out if I need to be walking loads and sweating. I’ve handwashed it once already and it seems fine.
